“If children hear fine music … and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.” Shinichi Suzuki
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Our high quality music education engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. (National Curriculum)
Music is a cornerstone of the broad and balanced education that every child receives at our school. It touches hearts and minds, it celebrates and challenges, and it connects us and moves us. In the same way that we teach children literacy and numeracy to prepare them for adult life, we also give them the musical tools they need for a lifetime of music-making and enjoyment. (National Plan for Music Education)
We use Kodaly pedagogical techniques (solfeggio; curwen hand signs) to accelerate children’s learning. Whole-class instrumental tuition is embedded into the curriculum, underpinned by class and whole school singing.
To boost progress for all learners, and particularly those with SEN, concepts are taught vocally, kinaesthetically (through Curwen hand signs as well as marking out pitch and rhythm), and visually (through the use of colour labelled instruments and notation).
Children also have the opportunity to learn a range of instruments including glockenspiel, ukulele, djembe, recover, violin and steel pan at St Thomas'.
