Welcome to St Thomas’ CE Primary School

What makes our school so special?

  • We are a small school with a caring and supportive staff team who work closely with children and families
  • We provide a high quality education within a Christian context and welcome children from all faiths and backgrounds
  • We have a broad curriculum and we love the arts
  • We have a beautiful modern building which helps us to have a calm, purposeful learning environment
  • The school is judged outstanding by Ofsted and has excellent teachers

We are very pleased to welcome you to our school. St Thomas’ is a small one form entry Church of England primary school. We are located in North Kensington just off the Portobello Road. We serve a wonderfully diverse community. In January 2009 we moved into our brand new school building, which we are very proud of.

At St Thomas’ we believe that a high quality education within a Christian context is the best start a child can have in their school life. We welcome children from all faiths and backgrounds and work in partnership with parents and the Church to build a sense of belonging to our community.

What parents say

Thank you to all the parents who responded to our questionnaire in the summer term. Governors are pleased to see how positive the responses were and that parents strongly agree that:

  • My child enjoys school
  • The school keeps my child safe
  • My child is making good progress at school
  • The teaching is good at this school
  • The school helps me to support my child's learning
  • The school encourages my child to read regularly

As always, we read all your comments on the questionnaires and will strive to ensure that we make communication as good as we can.

Some parents have specifically asked that we cut down on our use of paper and that we have better after school clubs:

  • We are doing all we can to put information online and make use of texting and emailing.  We are also trying to reduce the number of newsletters we print by emailing them to parents instead.
  • We will continue to do all we can to find the best club providers but hope that parents appreciate we need to fill up classes if they are to be affordable and therefore viable

Please continue to read the school newsletter each week as it contains all the important news you need, as well as key dates for assemblies and trips

Our plans for 2019-20

Quality of Teaching

We are excited about working closely with our colleagues in the federation between St Thomas’ and St Clement & St James schools. Our aim is to ensure the children benefit as much as possible from this new partnership, and through sharing good practice and learning from the strengths at both schools, we believe we will become stronger, together.

We recognise that there are some commonalities that all children and classrooms show when the children are making great progress in their learning:

Loud, clear voices

Everyone contributes respectfully

Active listening

Neat presentation

Resilience and perseverance

We will be actively looking for children who are consistently showing these attributes and celebrating their achievements as they make progress.

Research shows that children who read purely for the enjoyment of reading tend to do well and are happier generally.

Our aim across the two schools is to develop a real love of reading and passion for literature. As always, we will invest in new books for classrooms and promote books at every opportunity, but this year we are looking for ways to incorporate reading across the whole curriculum. This may be during any subject such as history, geography or science for example, but at every point, we will be pulling out the new subject specific vocabulary and encouraging the children to learn as many new words as possible.
